Curtis and I met in college at Utah State University, the first week of school in August 2008. I had just gotten back from my mission a few months before and didn't know many people in Logan anymore, since most of my friends had graduated while I was gone. My roommate and friend from before my mission, Amanda (Allan) Williams, had spent the summer in Logan before I came back up and had gotten to know a few people. She introduced me to Curtis on 900 North in Logan while we were headed up to an activity during Week of Welcome. We were heading up to watch a movie on the HPER field and we had some boys saving us seats. I wasn't super excited about sitting by these particular boys, as one of them was the boy who knocked me out with a nine iron golf club (on accident) on a date, several years earlier. Curtis and his buddy, Aaron Gamucio, had been up on the HPER field early to save seats with a couch. They were walking down the hill to get a sweatshirt and a sandwich before the movie started, and Amanda and I were walking up to meet the golf club boy and sit by his friends. We ran into them and started chatting and I immediately thought, "this boy is cute."
They invited us to sit with them (whew! Relief that I didn't have to sit by the other boy) and we hit it off and began chatting. (In the meantime, I called the other boy and told him something came up. Small, white lie.) About 5 minutes into the movie, Amanda decided to go on a walk with Bill (the boy she was dating at the time.) She said she'd be back, but never came back, which left me sitting in a group full of strangers. Awkward! I felt kind of stupid since I really didn't know any of the people I was sitting by, but I figured, "oh well." Curtis was nice and offered to walk me home after the movie was over. I was excited about that. He got my number and promised to call me sometime.
He eventually got around to calling me and we went bridge jumping on our first date. Little did he know that I was terrified of heights. I didn't know what it was that we were doing on the date until we got there. All I was told was to "dress up," so I was wearing a pink cape.
I was terrified to jump off the bridge, but eventually did it. Despite the fact that I hated heights, I had a lot of fun with Curtis and the date went well. I did tell him I needed to be home early since he took me out in the afternoon, I had another date that night, but was trying to figure out a way to keep that from him. He's smart and figured it out. Curtis thought he totally blew it, but luckily for him, I was more impressed than he'd realized. (And it certainly was helpful that the guy I went out with right after him was extremely arrogant and rude. Ha ha.)
After that date, we both got extremely sick. Chamomile tea (or "weed juice"as Curtis calls it), brought us together. Curtis called me to see how I was feeling. I had the sniffles, but he sounded horrible. I offered to bring him chamomile herbal tea and cough drops to help his sore throat. We sat at his grungy little apartment table and chatted for hours like old friends. The next night, he called me again and said he could use another dose of "weed juice." We ended up hanging out every night after that for the rest of the week. Ironically, we both had dates with other people on Friday and then Curtis took me out on another date on Saturday (a week after our first date) and we hiked up to The Wind Caves in Logan Canyon. We had our first kiss that night and both decided we didn't want to keep going on dates with other people after that.
The rest, as they say, is history...
We dated that whole school year, got engaged at the Wind Caves in February 2009, and got married May 7, 2009.
